Despite all the changes in the world since World War II, very little has changed in the duties of the Separation Center as it pertains to mobilization and demobilization processes for Soldiers. Franklin Evening Star, 1944: "War Department announces a Separation Center underway to aid returning veterans to resume normal lives. Everything possible is being done to ‘streamline’ the red tape associated to the returning GI Joe to civilian life. The 1585th SEP CTR handles men from IN, OH, IL & KY. This brings him close to home for final processing and reduces the amount of travel time when he leaves. In the words of Col. Bert Wampler, Commander of the Separation Center, ‘it is the objective of the Army to have the soldier leave the service with a pleasant memory, and to this end we try to make quick and easy all the examinations, interviews and paper work involved in each discharge.’ The separation process starts with an “orientation talk” then separation procedures, entitlements, Army regulations and finally the coveted paper- The Discharge Form. To accomplish all of the separation procedures requires a fast clicking organization such as has been assembled in the 1585th Service Unit here at Camp Atterbury.” The tradition continues 67 years later!! |
